I trained as an architect, so I think in drawing sets: decide once, apply everywhere. That habit turned into design systems across ten products, a physical product business that now runs on staff I hired, and a data platform I built by directing AI rather than writing every line. Fifteen years of building the machine, then handing over the keys.

City Electric Supply · 2022–present · Sole author

A design system ten products actually use

Loose layers and untracked groups became a governed library with naming conventions, nested components, and token logic. The interesting decisions were the ones that constrained every screen after them.

02 How I work

Systems before screens

The decisions worth arguing about are the ones that constrain every screen after them — naming, nesting, token logic, what earns the right to be a component. Screens are downstream of those.

I read the disagreement

I run the same problem past several models and look at where they diverge, not where they agree. Consensus is usually the obvious answer. The divergence is where the actual decision is hiding.

Drawing sets, not mockups

Two architecture degrees before I touched a product. Grids, tolerances, and annotated drawing sets are the same discipline as spacing scales and component specs: get it right once, let everyone else build fast.

03 Background

Jason Haynes

I've been the entire design team and I've directed a dozen designers across four time zones. The work I keep coming back to sits between those: building the thing that lets other people move fast without me in the room.

At Photon I led design for Fortune 500 clients — native apps, a healthcare platform, retail hardware. Before that I was the only designer at a venture-backed sports brand, pre-launch through retail shelves. Alongside all of it I've run a product business since 2011: designed the goods, manufactured them, sold them across eight channels and into West Elm, and built the operations that now run on hired staff.

These days I own the design systems at City Electric Supply and the research behind how they'd localize. I write code, I ship side projects, and I'm looking for a remote senior or staff role where systems thinking is the job rather than a side effect.

Open to remote senior and staff product design roles.
